The Follow-up Letter Follow-up is an essential step that is often overlooked. After creating and sending your résumé with a cover letter, you probably are thinking it is now in the employer’s ball court to respond and so you wait for a response. After a week or two without hearing anything you are frustrated and decide to forget about them, after all, they didn’t respond to you so why go out of your way to follow up with them, even though you would really like to work there? So, you move on - BIG MISTAKE. At any given time a company could have hundreds of résumé submissions. Now, with the prevalent use of faxes, they could get hundreds of submissions a day. It may be that after a week or two they are still in the process of reviewing candidates. Your résumé may be rising up through the pile - those who send a letter expressing their interest in the company and the job, while politely inquiring about an interview opportunity, could be pulled from the stack and moved to the top. At the very least that person’s name is seen more than once and the more visibility, the more chance for recognition. Keep the letter short and to the point, but don’t be shy about asking for an interview, others won’t be. $30 includes 10 copies
